Piano Lab

Collaborative Piano Classes
Ages 6–Adult | Grouped by Age & Ability
Maximum 5 Students

Piano Lab is Hatfield Music's innovative collaborative piano program, combining the individualized attention of private lessons with the energy, creativity, and teamwork of a small group setting. Students continue using the same trusted curriculum—including WunderKeys and Faber Piano Adventures—while learning alongside peers in an engaging, interactive environment.

Piano Lab is built around three connected learning experiences that help students learn, apply, and reinforce new musical skills each week.

The Learning Lab

The first 30 minutes of Piano Lab is our Learning Lab. Students learn together through instructor-led, interactive class instruction. New musical concepts are introduced in a collaborative setting with plenty of opportunities for discussion, demonstration, and participation.

Topics include:

  • Piano technique
  • Note reading
  • Rhythm
  • Music theory
  • Ear training
  • Sight reading
  • Musical expression

No headphones.

Students actively participate, ask questions, and learn together as a class.

The Music Lab

The second half of Piano Lab is devoted to making music. Students put their new skills into practice through collaborative music-making and guided teacher support.

Activities may include:

  • Ensemble playing
  • Guided individual practice
  • Musical games and challenges
  • Performance activities
  • Teacher coaching
  • Creative musicianship

This hands-on approach helps students develop confidence, strengthen musicianship, and learn how to make music with others.

THe Practice lab

Learning continues at home! Every Piano Lab student receives access to PracticeSpace, where teachers post:

  • Weekly lesson videos
  • Practice assignments
  • Musical challenges
  • Teacher notes and resources

Students and families may also communicate with their teacher throughout the week, ensuring support continues long after class has ended.

Why Piano Lab?

Piano Lab offers benefits that traditional private lessons and typical group classes cannot provide.

Students learn to:

  • Play confidently with others
  • Develop strong listening and ensemble skills
  • Build confidence through collaborative learning
  • Encourage and learn from their peers
  • Strengthen leadership, communication, and teamwork
  • Experience the joy of making music together

Small class sizes ensure every student receives personalized guidance while enjoying the motivation and camaraderie of learning in a musical community.

Parent Partnership (Ages 8 & Under)

We believe parents play an essential role in a child's musical success. For students ages 8 and under, a parent or guardian is required to attend class during the student's initial learning period. This partnership allows parents to understand our teaching approach, learn how to support effective home practice, and build habits that lead to long-term success.
